I have read lots on the period of around the Punic war and the period during the civil war, but I have yet to read a good modern book on the Romanization of the east. I have read some of the contemporary historians, but I would like to have a chance to take in some recent scholarship.

@mmyers - are they explicitly off topic for History SE? I know they are on-topic at Literature yet off-topic at SciFi... –  DVK Feb 2 '12 at 3:10
