History Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for historians and history buffs. It's 100% free, no registration required.

My question is, "is there any story or body of work that explains why Hercules does not bring his own family (i.e. his wife Megara and kids) back from the dead, considering he is capable of doing so? (see Hercules bringing someone else back from the underworld: http://ancienthistory.about.com/cs/grecoromanmyth1/g/Alcestis.htm)" This is an answerable question because anyone who either 1) points to a text that explains why he does not bring his family back from the dead 2) uses texts to extrapolate a reason for why this might be the case or 3) provides evidence that no such textual evidence exists and consequently prove that the answer to this question is definitively unknown has answered my question.

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

  • "Questions on social sciences other than History are off-topic here, unless they also involve history in some fashion. While ethics, archaeology, etc. are all connected to history, each field has their own experts who are better equipped to answer such questions." – Pieter Geerkens, Mark C. I believe the help center specifies that questions about mythology are out of scope. –  Mark C. Wallace Jul 27 at 2:00

I was directed here from stackexchange - philosophy. And the greek-mythology tag is a suggested on se.history, so I'm not the first. History is the best portal for asking this question and my question is very clearly answerable - if you don't know it, perhaps you should just move on. –  user3163829 Jul 27 at 2:15

Moreover I'm asking less about greek mythology and more about the lexicon of Ancient Greek literature. –  user3163829 Jul 27 at 2:16

A lot of new users seem to get the runaround like that, unfortunately. I hope you'll stick around! There's a mythology SE in the works (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/58307/mythology) but for now it looks like there's no SE where this is on-topic. –  Mr. Bultitude Jul 27 at 15:04
