My very Russian boss who is a history buff, insists that there is no such thing as a 'good' book on Russian history on the grounds that 'Russian history has yet to be decided'. I was re-reading Barbara Tuchmans book ' The Guns of August' and I would like to read an account of this period from a Russian point of view especially the early 20th century. Any suggestions?

This question is off-topic here (this is a Q&A site and not meant for compiling a list of recommendations). But your boss is right. I am reading a book on Russian history right now and it is a mess. The tendency to falsify history was always strong in Russia and it only got stronger when the communists got to power. The 19th century books (by Р.С.Костомаров and Н.М.Карамзин) are the more reliable ones but they obviously aren't very current. – Wladimir Palant Oct 17 '11 at 6:11

The Black Book Of Communism will have a fair few things about the Soviet area of Russian history: amazon.co.uk/Black-Book-Communism-Crimes-Repression/dp/… – Sardathrion Oct 17 '11 at 7:14
The Black Book Of Communism is very one-sided. Communism wasn't only bad thing for the Russians. Can't say about English books, but can you read on Russian? – VMAtm Jan 16 '12 at 13:07
Orlando Figes has written a few that were well received ... – Drux Mar 29 at 15:37
