I'm a big fan of stackexchange sites, being most active on stackoverflow. Today I was thinking about how "history repeats itself", and arrived at this question:

Looking at the free exchange of information, ideas, questions and answers that we can see at SE sites today: Do stack exchange sites in any form resemble what the actual Platonic Academy might've been like?

I dont know if Platonic Academy as an institution has been free or paid, and who could enter it and listen/participate.

The Platonic Academy would be closer to a discussion forum than a Q&A site, as dialectic was its primary learning method. Furthermore, while no fees where required, it was an extremely exclusive school - ΑΓΕΩΜΕΤΡΗΤΟΣ ΜΗΔΕΙΣ ΕΙΣΙΤΩ. In any case, any parallels with Stack Exchange would be superficial at best, even if we consider the Neoplatonic Academy as part of your question there are 1479 years of history between it and Stack Exchange. – Yannis Rizos Nov 8 '12 at 20:18
