What were some of the theories of how the Egyptian pyramids were built? I know about the one about placing logs under the stones to move them into place, but what are some other theories? Will there be back fire to those theories like if the logs were placed under the stone blocks they might sink into the sand?

Putting the big end at the bottom and placing less blocks on each layer as you go up were the major theoretical breakthroughs – mgb Dec 29 '12 at 4:27

Not the theories about aliens right? :D – Nathan Cooper Dec 29 '12 at 13:22
Off course not :) – Daniel Palamarchuk Dec 29 '12 at 15:20
Per the FAQ, "Your questions should be reasonably scoped. If you can imagine an entire book that answers your question, you’re asking too much." This question falls into that category as too broad. There are many theories. If you have a specific, objective question, feel free to ask. However, as it is now, this question is too broad to be answered by one single answer. – Luke Dec 30 '12 at 3:05

Most probably sledges rather than log rollers.

The problem with rollers is that you need extremely high compressive strength, so they don't get crushed, and very smooth flat strong roads for them to roll along.

There is a tomb painting of a statue being dragged along on a wooden sledge with a lot of people pulling on ropes and a couple of workers pouring jars in front of the runners. Because of the way friction scales with contact area this is quite a good way of moving large masses over fairly rough ground.

This needs a source... – Daniel Palamarchuk Dec 29 '12 at 18:38
adding a source will make you have proof. With proof, you will get more up votes and so will I!!! – Daniel Palamarchuk Dec 29 '12 at 19:28
I can remember the picture and i probably have it in a textbook but i couldn't find an online source – mgb Dec 29 '12 at 19:37
