comment Why didn't the Greeks or Romans have an Industrial Revolution?
@jwenting: But what if you couldn't afford to buy a mill and a dozen slaves?

Coke was sold in half-gallon (1.89 L) bottles in 1974. I think the jump from 2 quarts to 2 liters was simultaneous with that from glass to plastic.

@mcv: Didn't the Catholic Church declare Monday as the first day of the week as a way of rationalizing changing their holy day from Saturday to Sunday?

@oakad: Pre-metric Germany had units called the Nösel (~pint) and Kanne (~quart). Of course, the exact sizes of these units varied from city to city.

I've heard that the Dutch used MM-DD-YYYY order at the time they colonized New Amsterdam, but I've forgotten the reference.

comment Why wasn't the American civil war fought between slaves and masters?
There were Black Union soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg — and the ones who fell are buried in a segregated cemetery. The North abolished slavery first not because they were less racist, but because their higher immigration rates and lack of labor-intensive crops like cotton or tobacco reduced the "need" for slaves.
