comment Why and how were east Brandenburg, Pomerania and Silesia taken away from Germany after WW2?
Churchill just planned for the expulsions to cover the exclave of East Prussia and some minor adjustments of the prewar border. Stalin insisted on moving the border as far west as possible.

comment Why does the United States keep using “old” date representations and imperial system, while being in the minority?
Coke was sold in half-gallon (1.89 L) bottles in 1974. I think the jump from 2 quarts to 2 liters was simultaneous with that from glass to plastic.

@DanNeely: It's weird that the half-liter bottles are primarily labelled as “16.9 oz” when the larger sizes (1 L, 2 L, and 3 L) are primarily labelled in liters.

comment How did the Catholic Pope manage to become more powerful than Kings in old Europe?
The Pope is a king (of Vatican City). In the medieval era, the papal kingdom was much larger.

comment Why wasn't the American civil war fought between slaves and masters?
There were Black Union soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg — and the ones who fell are buried in a segregated cemetery. The North abolished slavery first not because they were less racist, but because their higher immigration rates and lack of labor-intensive crops like cotton or tobacco reduced the "need" for slaves.

Why should a country have to have a reason for not having a revolution?

comment Why do minor political parties in the US receive so few votes?
White Southern Baptists used to vote Dem, but today they're very unwelcome in that party.

comment Has there ever been a serious effort to reform the US Electoral College system?
@aeismail: Actually, it underweights votes from small states in the Banzhaf power index.
