comment What factors led to the rise of political parties in the United States?
Are there any nonpartisan parties? It sounds like "powdered water" to me.

comment Why was the Western Front so static in World War I?
For D-Day to happen, huge advances in amphibious invasion techniques had to be made. They weren't present in 1918.

comment Why was the Irish War of Independence in 1918 successful when other revolts failed?
India was much more important for them.

comment Is there any evidence to support the claim that the US Strategic Defense Initiative played any significant role in undermining the USSR?
Reagan's spending was kind of a Keynesian stimulus for the US economy emerging from the recession.

comment How does the amount of equipment carried by various historical infantries compare?
1. I'm not sure if height is so strongly correlated with carrying capacity, 2. soldier were often selected for above-average height in the past.

comment If the nazi is a far-right party, why is it socialist?
"There was a time when socialism really seemed like the way forward" - it still does, to many.

comment Were there reasons for Japan to go to war with US aside from US owning Philippines?
If the Philippines were independent, a Japanese invasion of them would still be seen by the US as a direct challenge.

comment How does the amount of equipment carried by various historical infantries compare?
Armies tend to put as much load on an infantry soldier as possible, so the total weight carried is determined mostly by the physical capabilities of a fit adult male. This did not change that much during the last 2000 years. If the current equipment gets lighter, soldiers will simply be given more stuff to carry.

comment Fanons 'Concerning Violence' makes the point that Nazism was the culminating point of the project of European Colonialism, how true is that?
If you read about the genocide of the Hereros and about Belgian Congo, you can see easily that it was kind of a rehearsal before the Nazi Holocaust.

comment Why was the US so against Japanese aggression in China but did nothing about Germany in Europe?
@jfrankcarr Given how Americans treated their own racial minorities (esp. Blacks), it would be weird if they had a lot of moral indignation about Nazi racial ideals.

comment Which European countries did not have a revolution in the aftermath of the French Revolution and why?
@jfrankcarr True! There was also a small-scale uprising in Ireland at the end of the XVIIIth century, and of course Jacobite uprisings in Scotland.

@Sid Germans would have been brutal, had the Czechoslovakian government resisted.

UK had its revolution about 100 years earlier. A Glorious one :)

comment Why was the US so against Japanese aggression in China but did nothing about Germany in Europe?
@Barry Another reason is that Hitler had many supporters in America (e.g. Henry Ford).

@Sid Annexation of the Czechoslovakia was also backed up by a military threat.

comment Is there any documentation that indicates the Aztecs were as violent as they are made out?
Or looking at the incarceration rate in modern USA, they would conclude that it was a society of prison wardens...

comment What Were the Types of Sieges?
A sitting siege was not without risks. You didn't suffer the casualties from assaulting the walls, but after some time the disease took an equally great toll.

@Canageek Actually the US was left with lots of unused ammunition after WW2.

comment Is there any country(former colony) in the world that obtained independence and then again tried to join its colonist ruler?
Belarus is still an independent country. The "Union State" is just a vague political concept, which is dead for all practical purposes.

comment Were sailing ships of the line understaffed with gunnery crews so that there were not enough for 2 broadsides?
The Marines could be quite busy during the action: shooting at the sailors and officers on the enemy's deck or manning the enemy's sails, or making sure nobody deserts from their post.
