comment Which figure is this a statue of?
@MarkC.Wallace No concrete evidence but the curly hair, long nose and brooding downward gaze is typical of an Antinous statue. There are also more statues of him than any other real life Roman or Greek.

comment What was the attitude of the other European countries in the 1970s Cod War?
@T.E.D probably because in the case of Newfoundland and Iceland fishing accounts for the majority of their respective economies.

comment What was the attitude of the other European countries in the 1970s Cod War?
West Germany continued fishing alongside the UK during the Cod War but didn't deploy any warships. I do know that Belgium made a separate deal with Iceland in 1972 and thus broke rank with the rest of the EU. Greenland and the Faroe Islands supported Iceland but as for the rest of western Europe I would think it likely that they supported the UK, simply because many of them were fishing alongside them in the debated waters.

@hermann Where have you heard that? It doesn't sound plausible.

comment How did Germany produce such an impressive portfolio of officers for WW2?
For some reason or another the German military seems to be more interesting to amateur pundits. The interest is usually not due to any shared political views but rather to the tendency to admire "military machines" fighting against the odds. See Sparta, elite divisions, Navy Seals, etc.

Interesting debate although I had to reach for the dictionary 3 times during the first paragraph alone!

That is not actually correct, the viking Thorfinnur Karlsefni traveled to America to settle the country. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…)
