comment Why is Las Vegas located where it is?
@paulsmith It's in the first paragraph of the section titled "1829–1905: origins". To wit, "By following the Pike and Smith routes through a tributary of Colorado River they came upon the Las Vegas Valley described by Smith as the best point to re-supply before going onto California."

comment Toyotomi Hideyoshi threatened to exterminate all Japanese foxes unless he heard from the god Inari. What was the aftermath (if any)?
@Anubhav But you believe the original source? FYI, the Wikipedia reference is from "Hall, Jamie. Half Human, Half Animal: Tales of Werewolves and Related Creatures. Bloomington, Indiana: Authorhouse, 2003. (pp. 121–152) ISBN 1-4107-5809-5" which doesn't exactly sound like the fount of reliability that you appear to think it is. You're asking a question about a yarn and getting another in reply. That's the way myths work.

comment Benefits of Athenian citizenship
Great answer! Thank you. Were there any restrictions on ownership of say, land or slaves? Also, re: liturgies, surely it wasn't always voluntary. I recall reading that in some of them, a "volunteer" could get away with not paying up if he could find a citizen wealthier than he was.

@YannisRizos I was asking in general and used Pericles in an attempt to signify ancient Athens at its democratic height. Please feel free to edit the question as necessary to clear any ambiguity.
