I'm a PhD student in atmospheric remote sensing in Kiruna, Sápmi (Lapland), Sweden. I first came to Stack Exchange for practical reasons: Tex.SE has been of major help when I wrote my licentiate (midterm) thesis. Since then, I have discovered the joy of many websites. As my network profile will show, I'm interested in travel, outdoor, scientific skepticism, and as I work in academia, also in academia and LaTeX.

comment What was the situation of homosexuals in the early Soviet Union?
So the words and cultural attitudes change. What I mean is what the attitudes were toward individuals who feel sexually attracted to other individuals of the same sex.

@SamuelRussell Why are my terms anachronisms? Homosexuality has always existed so the question about the societal attitudes toward homosexuality is not limited to any particular time, region, or culture.

@jwenting I think you are over-dramatising the situation in the GDR. The GDR was not stalinism at its worst.

@SamuelRussell I don't know whether Western medical practitioners use the term "men who have sex with men" in preference to "homosexual", and if they do, I don't know why. Note that they don't mean the same, as homosexuals can be of either sex. I'm not sure what the different perspectives of freedom are but I find your sub-questions rather philosophical. All I'm looking for are historical accounts describing the situation of gays/homosexuals in the described time period.

@SamuelRussell I don't understand what problem you see in the question. Since the sexual revolution the western view of homosexuality has changed, but homosexuality has always existed. I'm not sure what a theorisation of human freedom means.

I don't think it's fair to apply a study into the evilness of the Nazis to the GDR. The differences in the severity of human right violations are vast. Many people did and still do hold that there were many aspects of the GDR that were good. The GDR was not the Soviet Union or North Korea.

Spies don't wear uniforms saying spy on them. GDR population did not starve. As for only seeing the good things, the interesting thing is that those in the GDR wanting capitalism also only saw the good things.

@DVK ... then they could equally well have written "since the birth of Napoleon"... I think it does imply someone was convicted in Nuremberg.

It's probably cheaper to simply write off the debt.

In addition to the statistics given by @astadaba: Libya in 2010 had a HDI of 0.77‌. Algeria had 0.69, Egypt had 0.64. So based on education and life expectancy, the average Libyan /did/ have it better. Note that Saudi Arabia had the same HDI, but probably much worse inequalities.

I'm all for moving to history.SE, I don't have the reputation to vote or see votes, though.
