My main occupation is to debug cruft I write in my free time.

That is, after struggling to stay alive.

Here you can see my beekeeping stackexchange proposal - interested?

@LouisRhys My take was that Anixx should have asked the question - so I didn't

comment New theory on origins of modern-day Romania?
@Ovi The time needed to influence the language of a population depends on a number of factors, including e.g. the number of colonists sent and the presence (and prestige) of a local writing. Just my 2 cents.

comment What was Libya's form of direct democracy (Jamahiria) like in practice?
@EugeneSeidel Amicus Eugene, sed magis amica veritas: there is no contradiction in the passage, because the elected representatives would just pass the results of the local voting. In representative democracies instead it is the representative himself that decides how to vote, according to his own judgement.

@FelixGoldberg By the way, my initial reference about Henry III's plan to use the Normans against Byzantium is based on Runciman's work. Admittedly he mentions this fact only briefly, the focus of his book being elsewhere.

@FelixGoldberg I agree with your reconstruction. Our opinions diverge - I think - in that when they started establishing themselves (rather than serving as mercenaries) they had some sort of legal acknowledgment from the Emperor and Pope. The very Ranulf received multiple acknowledgments from Conrad II.

@FelixGoldberg Dear Felix, please have a look at my "answer" below. Although it is only tentative, it suggests that things might have been different. Best

-1 Because, according to my sources, this is partially incorrect. I'm obviously open to discussion, cheers

comment Where was the furthest extent of Arabian trade explorations?
By the way, traveling as far east as Khanbalik (=Beijing) was already possible Eastern Christians in the Middle Ages, who knew China as "Tzinitza". In fact, it was a Christian Bishop that helped translating the Buddhist sacred texts into Chinese.

Hi Frederic, I am sure that you can find some useful references for Arabic travelers in Eastern Africa, i.e. Somalia, Kenya and South as far as Zanzibar and Madagascar (at least). I have remembrance of reading about Arabic merchant trading with these people when I studied Hanno the Navigator. +1 Anyways
