comment Has any other book in history been as “prescriptive” as Mein Kampf?
1984 was a proscribed book in most of the Soviet bloc. The only exception I know of is Yugoslavia

comment What were the post World War 2 effects on Germany?
The entry about German POWs should mention the very large difference between Allied POWs and POWss held by the Russians. The death rate in UK POW camps was very low. For example, of the approx 155,000 German POWs from Stalingrad only around 5,000 made it back home (See Anthony Beever book on this subject). Italian POWs from North Africa fared much better.

comment Why did Canada not join the American Revolution?
How could it not affect Canada? When war comes to what you perceive as your borders there will be outcomes. Think of Afghanistan right now and what this is doing to Pakistan.

comment What are the scholarly opinions on the idea of the “European Civil War”?
Well that's something new. I agree with Wladimir Palant that the concept is unhelpful. I would prefer that the term 'World War' and 'Civil war' be kept separate. I always thought that the very definition of a World War was one where the majority of countries were involved which makes the Civil War concept overwhelming. As a counter example, the American Civil War could be conceived as a world war given the number of different nationalities that served in the various armies.

comment When were swords last used in European warfare?
Thanks Rincewind42. Now I need to track down the Australians in Gaza in 1918. This may never end...

comment Why wasn't the Republic of Ireland invaded (by either side) in WW2?
hawbsl - Not quite true. The treaty ports in Southern Ireland which were under British control ( Berehaven, Queenstown (modern Cobh) and Lough Swilly ) were handed back to to Ireland in 1938. Winston Churchill agitated both as First Lord and Prime Minister for renewed access but to no avail. It would have saved a lot of losses for refueling rights there.

comment When did the practice of formally “declaring war” cease and why?
I always understood that since the UN was formed, no member state is allowed to declare war. Seems rather odd though as there has been plenty of fighting.

comment Which 11 countries were democratic in 1941?
Thinking about it more, I believe I could make a good case for the UK not being in the list as all normal democratic processes were suspended for the duration. Only by-elections were held, generally uncontested and the composition of the government did not change. As the whole of the UK was essentially under a benign marital law, I would suggest only the USA was a functioning democracy in 1941.

comment Which 11 countries were democratic in 1941?
Rory makes a good point. In that case I would argue that Iceland should have been on the list as a constitutional monarchy but in 1941 it was occupied by the British and then later by the USA. The date of 1941 does complicate matters. Why isn't Australia and New Zealand on this list?

comment Which 11 countries were democratic in 1941?
Lebanon was certainly not a democracy in 1941. Far from it. Like it's neighhbours it's was partially or wholly under martial law with a Vichy regime in charge and about to be attacked by Free French forces and the British. I am surprised it's on the list.
