Formerly known as "Jimmy Shelter".

Then one appeared among us, in our own form visible, but greater and more beautiful; and he said that he had come out of pity.

I'm like the Clint Eastwood of backups. I drift into town, say "ahm-a gonna clean up yer backups", shoot the place up a bit, get rid of the bad guys, then drift back out again.

Been there, done that, still doing it.

comment Why does the United States keep using “old” date representations and imperial system, while being in the minority?
I lived through such a transition as well, and it was painless enough. It does take maybe two decades or so to fully shake out, and you definitely don't transition everything at once. Decimalization of currency, solid units of measure, liquid units of measure, lengths, etc can all be done one at a time, and at the end you no longer say that your car gets 40 rods to the hogshead.

comment What was the significance of the Mississipi River on the Civil War and Westward Expansion?
By this argument you should also be considering the Danube, and (especially) the Tigris/Euphrates. The Mississipi is of regional importance (it's just a very big region), the Tigris/Euphrates were of world importance.

comment Did Heisenberg undermine the German atomic bomb by deliberately hiding his expertise from the Nazis?
@Anixx - be careful - Tom Au did not say that he "wanted to be ethical"; you may have your own opinion on this but you're falsely putting words into Tom Au's mouth here.

comment Could you help me identify this photograph that was taken shortly after World War 2?
It's quite clearly the left-hand wall in this photo. +1

comment Are “I, II, III, …” versions of archaeological versioning of layers unique to Troy?
Is it standard? Don't know. It it unique to Troy? No way - Uruk at least uses it too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruk#Historic_periods_of_Uruk

comment Muslim population in Islamic Iberia
Córdoba was at one time the largest city in Europe, possibly the world, (whatcordoba.com/history-cordoba.html, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%B3rdoba,_Andalusia) and had the largest mosque in the west. I've no definitive figures (so comment rather than answer) but the population must have been quite significant.

comment Have the current polar ice caps receded further than those that existed before the beginning of the last Ice Age?
We're actually still in an ice age; just a nice interglacial part of one, but still an ice age nonetheless.
