Why is our planet called Earth? Did anybody else read "Middle-earth" instead of Middle Irish -ert "earth"? |

Why is our planet called Earth? The same with Polish, Ziemia (name of the planet) means "ground, soil, dry land". |

When and how did the idea of a “class-less” society originate in the United States? Felix, but unlike American Revolution, French Revolution was a war of classes, in order to provide class-less (well, at least more class-less) society. The same with communists. |

Effect of natural environment on the development of cultures While the question is interesting, it's still one of those you could write a book about, what makes it not fitting this particular website. It's also not exactly history, rather anthropology. Speaking about particular examples of such influence would do, but talking about it in overall is a different matter. |

Historical and biblical names for bottles of wine Yes, in French, Balthasar and Melchior are commonly referred as "rois mages", which points at their role as kings. In Polish it's only "kings", without "magi" reference as in English. |

Historical and biblical names for bottles of wine Indeed, it seems to explain everything, thanks. Still I'd love to know what does "man of great worth" mean, most possibly it's English translation of some French phrasal verb. |

Could Columbus have suspected the New World lay on his path to India? In order to make it possible, one of three things would have to happen. Columbus being a time traveler, having close encounter with representatives of some alien form of life or having a vision from God himself. This way either the reliable sources on that matter 1) weren't written yet, as the case will start in the future, 2) are kept in some kind of Galactic Library, written in the language most probably not available for us 3) need to be taken at faith, or are kept in Vatican, which would be the easiest, especially that there's an American resident recently. |

Have historians envisioned how World II would have developed without Churchill as Prime Minister of Britain? Hmm, comparing "if we fail" with the context of the question ("without Churchill as Prime Minister"), I find here only a suggestion that Britain would lose the war without him. It would be all OK if it was stated by Churchill himself, but it wasn't, it's basically your opinion. This leads to a question if we should count it as being made by a recognized historian. :) |

Most fought over piece of land? Hmm I don't find any particular area of Polish (or ex-Polish) land which would be worth to mention as an answer. There were always times of war and peace. |

Why are the Portuguese so obsessed with salted codfish? Thanks for the recommendation, I'm writing a story set in the medieval times with salt being a highly important prop and I may found there something interesting for me. |
