+1 great answer. I'm a senior in high school and I'm really starting to get interested in history. What do you recommend to read instead of textbooks? I know that there are many books on specific topics but I think it might be a good idea to get a general feel for history from the textbooks before I read about more detailed topics.

@SamuelRussell I looked in the index and didn't find too much information about what exactly they meant by the social classes. I added a couple excepts from the book that might be helpful.

How much control would the Emperor actually have? Would he be able to merge the military forces of all the states in the Empire? I realize this may be very different in different time periods, but I am focusing more on 15th-17th century.

comment What is the Holy Roman Empire?
@FelixGoldberg I think the confusion is coming out of me not completely understanding the HRE. I was assuming that the Holy Roman Emperor automatically becomes the king of Austria, so if Alfonso won the election I thought he would replace the rightful heir of the Austrian throne, and that's why I said it probably wouldn't happen peacefully. But I just realized that that doesn't make any sense. I guess if Alfonso was elected he would have had some authority, but he wouldn't replace any German kings as far as I understand now. (please correct me if I'm wrong with anything).

@FelixGoldberg so for example if Alfonso X would have won the election, would he have taken over the territories of the contemporary have automatically taken authority over Austria and the other Germanic States? I doubt that would happen peacefully

@FelixGoldberg So was the Holy Roman Emperor always the same person as the ruler of Austria/other Germanic states?
