That is not at all saying that people were stupid like 6 year olds. People believe weird things sometimes. A significant part of our population believe that when you say a special blessing on a wafer, it turns into the body of a man who died 2,000 years ago (and no, many people do not simply believe that to be "symbolically" true). Other people believe in Bigfoot. Believing in things that aren't real does not categorize you as stupid.
