How did ethnic Turkish people embrace Islam? @NewAlexandria According to an etymological dictionary I have on hand, şaman was a borrowing from Sanskrit into Central Asian Turkic languages. Derivatives can be found in Uyghur and other languages. |

How did ethnic Turkish people embrace Islam? @NewAlexandria Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that şaman is a traditional Turkic word, but rather it is used in modern Turkish in this way. |

How did ethnic Turkish people embrace Islam? @NewAlexandria The word "şamanizm" is also used in Turkish to describe their pre-Christian and pre-Islamic beliefs. |

What were the causes of the “Dardenelles” fiasco in World War I @TomAu Same reason that capitals are usually targeted in war as a means of causing the capitulation of the entire country. A general invasion of Anatolia would have been extremely difficult for an army that was unable to even take the Dardanelles. The Greeks attempted exactly just what you are suggesting in the 1920s and didn't fare too well. |

What is the history of gun culture of USA? "Crime happens for various reasons, and availability of guns doesn't really effect it." I almost went in and corrected effect to affect... but no, I think this is one of the rare cases where both work! Bravo! |

Why did the Erdoğan government like to worsen Turkey's relationship with Israel? @BROY The book looks bound on the right so presumably it is in Hebrew, even if it has Latin letters on the cover. It is undoubtedly about something other than "intelligence quotient". |

What was normal attire for Hindu kings in the 15th century? @Shyam You need to change the wording: "proper" is not the proper way of asking this question. |
