comment Where does the name of the country “Belarus” come from?
@Anixx And yet Wikipedia states: "Vasmer's dictionary mentions the dichotomy of "white" land and "taxed" land in Domostroi and speculates that "white" Russia may have referred to the parts of Russia that were not subject to Tatar rule." and "Alternatively, it [White Russia] may have its origins in the four coloured cardinal directions used in many Slavic and central Asian cultures, where white is an indicator for north."

There is a tradition of giving naming compass directions after colours in Turkic cultures. The best example is from the perspective of Anatolia, you have the Black Sea to the north, the Red Sea to the south, the White (Mediterranean) Sea to the west (the east is blue, by the way). Russia experienced waves of Turkic (Tatar) invasions and migrations, so it's possible that the association of 'white' with the west that they didn't conquer was a borrowing into Russian. Of course, my conjecture is probably just as fanciful as the one about the beautiful girl!

comment How was the modern geographic boundary between Europe and Asia decided?
@Anixx You are right. I guess I was trying to point out that continents - by any definition - do not have fixed boundaries that are universally accepted.

A minor point: Warsaw isn't a port. If she went through Warsaw, perhaps she sailed from Danzig?

Are you only interested in heads of state? In many countries (notably constitutional monarchies) the head of state is a ceremonial figure with no or little political power.

I guess the answer should clarify if she personally endorsed this decision since the Dutch monarch has no role in actually making laws.

I'm trying to think of criteria... Maybe regular upkeep? Or being paved (starting with flagstones and the like)?

comment What was the status of Arab Christians during the crusades?
Just another note - a majority of the Middle East's Christians would have been non-Arab, although in the main areas of fighting (the Levant), the Christian Arabs would have outnumbered the non-Arab Christians.
