At what point did mapmaking begin to accurately reflect what we now know about the earth? @LennartRegebro - well who wants to visit a bunch of hairy barbarians anyway? The maps were drawn by/for trading voyagers and few of them got that far (or few came back) |

Why are the police never responsible for guarding the Head of the State? Outside the USA most police are national rather than local, and often the anti-terrorist/intelligence agencies are part of the police |

What is the Macedonian naming dispute really about? @Rory - and that isn't true of every other 'religous' dispute since Ogg the caveman argued about the sun god? |

When was cannabis legalized in the Netherlands? Most 'recreational' drugs were only banned in the moral outrage era of prohibition. In WWI heroin and cocaine could be bought freely in London |

Which European countries did not have a revolution in the aftermath of the French Revolution and why? @MoziburUllah - I think the picture is that the English civil war 'failed' since we got a king back. While the French revolution 'succeeded' in spite of them getting a succession of monarchs/emperors |

What was Finland's position in World War Two? Possibly fairer to say that the Finns were caught in the middle. Russia wanted the territory and there wasn't much else they could do. |

Which European countries did not have a revolution in the aftermath of the French Revolution and why? @quant_dev - or you could say the English civil war was the first revolution in europe. The resulting monarchy/parliament power balance even after the restoration was pretty stable |

Is there any evidence that the catholic church reduced innovation during the middle ages? Bruno was sentenced for his anti-church philosophy rather than cosmology and Galileo really fell foul of party politics. The others were mostly banned because they were in protestant countries after the reformation, rather like the US communist book banning in the 60s. By the 18C the church's power to really effect anything was declining. |

When did navies stop giving out a drink ration to their sailors? @MichaelF - If you are climbing up a 200ft tall mast to change sail, in a storm or under cannon fire - being "three sheets to the wind" is the last thing you want. |

Did American Indians disrupt railroads in their regions? @TED - originally the title was just Indians + Railways - which to a Brit means India. I changed it to Native Americans just to avoid confusion - I wasn't making a political point. |

Did American Indians disrupt railroads in their regions? @steven drennon - thanks I wasn't being overly PC, but using "Indians" and railways suggests an entirely different continent to the majority of English speakers in the world and "native-americans" was the existing tag |
