comment Why are many African nations poor?
This question might be a better fit on the new politics.se!

comment Was there a single ancient religion that all others sprang from?
Buddhism grew out of Hinduism, and as such there is significant overlap

comment Is the USA Congress explicitly patterned after the British Parliament?
Re: Direct election to the upper house. The Senate was much closer to the House of Lords originally, in that state legislatures- not ordinary citizens, selected senators. In the 1900s, however, the 17th amendment changed tat, making them directly elected. (and killing federalism in the process, but I digress)

comment How does Nigeria stay together?
As Yannis correctly points out, Nigeria has had much more instability and civil war than the United States.

This would be better on Christianity.SE

comment Where were the Mormons going?
We have a pretty good Mormon following on Christianity.Se. (I'm not one, but we all stick together.). If you don't get a great answer here, you may want to trying asking there as well.

comment Does US law permit spending taxpayers' money to support foreign political parties?
@T.E.D. What law prohibits foreign donors from giving to American political campaigns? Indeed, it would run counter to the Buckley decision to make a law to this effect. The right to contribute to a campaign is protected free speech.

comment When did the American War of 1812 actually end?
The Americans also surely realized that as the Napoleonic War was winding down, the British would be able to spare capacity to focus on the Americas, something the fledgling country would have been ill-equipped to handle. In both the Revolution and the War of 1812, we outlasted the British - we didn't really "defeat" them.

comment Why isn't Somaliland recognized as a separate country?
If I remember correctly, Eritrea is strongly opposed - probably for the reason that Ethopia likes it :) I'm not sure, but Kenya may be in the same boat...

comment What other countries besides the US participated in keeping African slaves?
My guess is that "British America minus North America" probably includes British Guyana, various islands in the Caribbean, and possibly Belize.

What's your source for these numbers, by the way?

That would make sense. In Europe proper, you'd have guilds and tradesmans associations (unions) that would not have wanted the competition. In the colonies, you had an unskilled workforce and a desperate need for sheer numbers of laborers.

comment Is there any evidence that the catholic church reduced innovation during the middle ages?
Reading through the comments above, I'm beginning to think the purpose of this question isn't to make an answer but fuel a fire. I'm disappointed, because the works I cite above will provide a lot of the statistics you're looking for. They just might not make the case some people want to make.

comment Looking for a particular documentary about history of long distance communication
Around the same time though, I seem to remember a documentary talking about the history of long distance communication where the French would station semaphores - people waving flags - to transmit messages. Maybe that might be a lead?

Just curious, why the downvote?
