Data warehousing/ETL developer, specialising in Teradata but now mostly working with DataStage. Had a brief foray as a Ruby on Rails developer. Also making iPhone games in my spare time (Objective-C is a terrible language).

I'm assuming that by "public", you mean the English public. I doubt the French would have as positive an impression of him.

comment When and why China started to make a difference in the superpower arena?
I don't think China's entry to the WTO explains by itself China's current economic strength, as GDP growth was already pretty strong well before that.

I thought tropical areas typically have a dry season and a wet season. Don't these need to be taken into account for farming?

Thanks for your answer. While a full analysis of the lasting impact would be awesome, I'd be happy to accept this as the correct answer if you can provide some reasons for the successes.

+1 for mentioning what Alexander inherited from Persia. Logistics would have been a lot harder without the well planned road systems of a large empire.

comment What made Alexander great?
Well, Philip's other son Arrhidaeus could certainly not have done it. Plutarch thinks that Agesilaus could have beaten Alexander to the Persian throne had he not been called back. I don't agree given the far smaller numbers that Agesilaus had, but I do think that he would have succeeded had he been in Alexander's situation.
