comment Was Cossack cavalry ineffective relative to other troops?
By the way, the most heavily trained were the Cossacks. They started to train to ride before they could walk. And to use sabres (wooden, of course), about 4-5 years old. And that rule worked during from their start till 1920-ties. They were never random soldiers - they lived as fighters their whole life and they were not soldiers, because they didn't get payment till 19th cent. I hope, you know the meaning of "soldier". Only one of your affirmative paragraph is not total nonsense.

@mart A very nice custom, it is a pleasure to read about such. It is like the custom to leave food, water and wood in the forest cabins in Sweden and in Siberia. Usually people are much more kind to each other in the harsh surrounding - if not, they simply die out.

comment How do Tamahagane, Damascus, and Toledo Steel compare?
@Greg I collected this info while buying some work knives the last year. I am afraid that now I would need to find these sources the same way as you. And -alas- most of them anyway were in Czech language. But I have seen a nice article on the subject in English a week ago - cracked.com/…

comment How did modern border security and crossing bureaucracy develop?
@Bregalad Then don't forget to define the contemporary format, please. And this won't help with the multiquestion problem. In such situations I prefer rather than propose the closing, to answer one of the subquestions thinking that somebody else will answer the others.

comment How did modern border security and crossing bureaucracy develop?
@Bregalad Then the question should be simply closed, as several questions in one (crossing, visa, pass...) and as undefined - for nobody can say what OP means by modern
