comment Animal “blood lust”
@T.E.D. - In researching it, I mainly looked around for stuff related to Bucephalus, since that was the war animal that first came to mind. If they weren't associated with a famous military leader, animals didn't get much mention in ancient accounts. More recently, given our changes in society, they get mentioned by name. Check out this account of 'war cats' I ran across: care2.com/greenliving/5-famous-cats-of-war.html

comment How Did The US Justice System Lose Sight of Intent?
@KeithThompson - You're correct in that the intent of lawmakers was to eliminate judicial discretion for certain criminal laws. However, I interpreted the question to fall into the area criminal intent and the lack of judicial discretion in the US legal system when it came to judging the level and circumstances of that intent, not the intent of lawmakers in writing the bill.

@KeithThompson - See cato.org/publications/congressional-testimony/… - "Mandatory minimums eliminate judicial discretion to impose a prison term lower than the statutory floor, making case-specific information about the offense and offender irrelevant, at least to the extent that these facts might call for a below-minimum sentence."

@T.E.D. - Mandatory sentencing for drug offenses was the start of the big climb in rates. Lack of judicial discretion in sentencing has been expanded to many other crimes as well due to various political pressures from both right and left groups.

comment Gold Confiscation Act of 1933
@T.E.D. I'm probably more of a mix of Friedman's Chicago School and Nassim Nicholas Taleb's "Black Swan" thoughts. While I can find points of agreement with the Austrians, I usually find myself arguing with them more than I do Keynesians when it comes to politics and the economy.

BTW, my browser (Firefox 12.0) crashed when I visited the home page of that gold eagle site. Do you think they could pack in any more ads there? The linked page seems safe though.

comment What was the world population around 970 BC? Does it fit the biblical narrative?
The world population estimates of the time period would suggest that an adult male population of 800K in Palestine is a plausible number. That said, numbers in the Bible have been mistranslated at times so that's why I'd suggest the hermeneutics site to probe that aspect.
