comment What happens after a widespread social chaos?
"Despots themselves don't deny that freedom is a wonderful thing, they only want to limit it to themselves; they argue that everyone else is unworthy of it." - Alexis de Tocqueville

comment What incentives are in place for American soldiers to go fight in Iraq?
@StevenDrennon - A college friend of mine who was a Ranger always ragged on me for being assigned to logistics in the Marines, saying I got "soft" duty. Yeah, right.

@Rodrigo - For just a regular term of service, typically 7 years including inactive reserve duty, you don't get anything extra afterward. For 20+ years, you get a pension and some other long term benefits.

comment Why did the French insist on reclaiming Indo-China after WWII?
@Gilles - de Gaulle set the process in motion of reclaiming lost Indo-China colonies during his brief tenure as the French leader from the end of WWII until January 1946. His philosophy of Gaullism set the stage for French foreign policy for decades. His policies were pursued even when his party wasn't in power.

I'd say the shear pigheadedness of one Charles de Gaulle.

comment Was the Titanic tragedy at least partly avoidable?
@harper89 - I tried to find the name of the show but I couldn't locate it. Google results for Titanic documentaries are clogged with "made for Adsense" sites and such and I couldn't find it right off on Amazon or NetFlix.

comment Was the Titanic tragedy at least partly avoidable?
There was a History Channel show on this a while back. As I recall, they concluded that it couldn't have been avoided although a direct collision would have saved the ship while killing a hundred or so people in the forward compartments.
