comment How accurately could ancient astronomers find latitude and longitude?
Some information about ancient latitude/longitude navigation system is in the 1421 book by Gavin Menzies. However, information in this book is certainly to be taken with caution, and I do not have my copy offhand.

comment In the French Republican calendar: were Quintidis holidays?
Being French native speaker I can propose a translation: The excess work imposed by the ten-day rhythm could also be a reason for the rejection the new time was the victim of. [...] The creators of the laws on decadi observance of year VI also accounted for this dimension of the issue by allowing for additional rest on the afternoon of quintidi This matches what I was told in history lessons (which I recall only partially). This makes 1.5 days of rest every 10 days, matching approximatively the 1 every day (in fact, a bit better).

comment When did the British monarch become an emperor?
So, if I understand correctly, there is a British Empire, but no British Emperor (just a British King/Queen that happens to be Emperor elsewhere)?
