comment How Did The US Justice System Lose Sight of Intent?
@KeithThompson I cannot defend my previous statment as I should have said that mandatory minimum sentences exacerbate the issue of intent: for example three convictions for selling marajuana = life in prison under the 3 strikes law.

Mandatory minimum sentences often ignore intent and are also much more common in the USA.

comment Was democracy present in India before British colonization?
The link to the Anglo-Sikh war was fascinating. I haven't viewed all of them as of now.

comment Why did the British not introduce the sterling in India?
It would be nice to know why the British gave up hope-or why they did not replace the silver dollar in the Straits Settlements. It is good to know that the British tried.

comment Why did the United Kingdom industrialize first?
The cost of labor was twice as high in Britain compared to continental Europe-due to everything being more expensive on an island. Higher wages meant that labor saving technology was much more valuable in Britain than the rest of Europe.

comment Was democracy present in India before British colonization?
@E1Suave When I say "democracy pre-dating British colonization," I mean "democracy that was in no-way instigated by or associated with British influence." If during the time of the East India Company democracy existed without British influence, then that would count as pre-dating British Colonization. However if the East India Company instigated or strongly influenced the implementation of democracy then that would not qualify. I used the word Colonization instead of influence in the title because that was what instigated this question.

comment Was the secession of the Confederate states illegal?
The 10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The power to secede was not granted to the Federal government. Therefore...it is reserved for the States.
