comment Why did the British not introduce the sterling in India?
It would be nice to know why the British gave up hope-or why they did not replace the silver dollar in the Straits Settlements. It is good to know that the British tried.

comment Why did the United Kingdom industrialize first?
The cost of labor was twice as high in Britain compared to continental Europe-due to everything being more expensive on an island. Higher wages meant that labor saving technology was much more valuable in Britain than the rest of Europe.

comment Was democracy present in India before British colonization?
@E1Suave When I say "democracy pre-dating British colonization," I mean "democracy that was in no-way instigated by or associated with British influence." If during the time of the East India Company democracy existed without British influence, then that would count as pre-dating British Colonization. However if the East India Company instigated or strongly influenced the implementation of democracy then that would not qualify. I used the word Colonization instead of influence in the title because that was what instigated this question.

comment Was the secession of the Confederate states illegal?
The 10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The power to secede was not granted to the Federal government. Therefore...it is reserved for the States.

comment Why did Canada not join the American Revolution?
@TomAu It is important to note that there was good logic behind the British decision to give Quebec control over the Midwest. The Indians there were allied with the French against the British colonies during the 7years war (1750s). When the Americans did enter the midwest there was war...a war Britain could not be bothered with as it was already fighting in Europe.

comment Approximately what was the short-term economic loss to Britain as a result of the Revolutionary War being lost?
Lost tax revenue... which was rather insignificant. Also, lost military recruits. What about the costs of future wars? (1812) Hypothetical losses are rather difficult to determine.

comment How did Quebec transition from French Law to English Law?
Britain did not impose British law on the French people of Quebec before the Quebec Act of 1774. What occurred in 1873 to begin the transition to more French influence?
