Why did the United Kingdom industrialize first? The cost of labor was twice as high in Britain compared to continental Europe-due to everything being more expensive on an island. Higher wages meant that labor saving technology was much more valuable in Britain than the rest of Europe. |

Was democracy present in India before British colonization? @E1Suave When I say "democracy pre-dating British colonization," I mean "democracy that was in no-way instigated by or associated with British influence." If during the time of the East India Company democracy existed without British influence, then that would count as pre-dating British Colonization. However if the East India Company instigated or strongly influenced the implementation of democracy then that would not qualify. I used the word Colonization instead of influence in the title because that was what instigated this question. |

Was the secession of the Confederate states illegal? The 10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The power to secede was not granted to the Federal government. Therefore...it is reserved for the States. |

Why did Canada not join the American Revolution? @TomAu It is important to note that there was good logic behind the British decision to give Quebec control over the Midwest. The Indians there were allied with the French against the British colonies during the 7years war (1750s). When the Americans did enter the midwest there was war...a war Britain could not be bothered with as it was already fighting in Europe. |

Approximately what was the short-term economic loss to Britain as a result of the Revolutionary War being lost? Lost tax revenue... which was rather insignificant. Also, lost military recruits. What about the costs of future wars? (1812) Hypothetical losses are rather difficult to determine. |

How did Quebec transition from French Law to English Law? Britain did not impose British law on the French people of Quebec before the Quebec Act of 1774. What occurred in 1873 to begin the transition to more French influence? |

What were the reasons that the British colonies in North America rebelled but not others? @MichaelF I edited out the speculation, but it is more than slightly ironic that England broke-off the revolutionary war to counter the French threat in Europe, which was indirectly protecting the newly formed USA. |

Is the Bible considered a reliable historical resource? @NullUserException I have no problem with micro or macro-evolution according to the scientific definitions. However, evolution of man from amoebas would take a lot more than the scientific definition of macro-evolution. |

Why was Africa never really colonized? Who wants to live in the Sahara? or in Malaria prone tropical Africa? South Africa was tolerable and therefore settled. |

Is the Bible considered a reliable historical resource? @NullUserException All of your examples have not been proven. If God can create the universe, why can't he give it apparent age greater than actual age? The flood has not been proven false--in fact the large number of well preserved fossils supports the existance of a world-wide flood. The existence of fossil fuels (why didn't the trees just rot instead of being buried and turned to oil?) and the Grand Canyon also suggests the Flood is not impossible. The Israelites migrating through the desert had their food supplied daily, so what evidence is to be expected? |

Is the Bible considered a reliable historical resource? @NullUserException please cite a reference to back up your claim that science has refuted Genesis and Exodus. I stand by the claim of Biblical accuracy. |

What aternative locations were considered for the United Nations? The most neutral place for the UN to be located would be Antarctica. Perhaps Canada or Greenland (1/2 way to Europe) would be more convenient locations. |
