Hello world,

My name is not Monster Truck II and I was not born in 1920. But here is something about me that I feel comfortable sharing. I studied physics and computer science at college and enjoy reading (history, politics, and economics) and listening to music.

Here is my bookshelf:

comment How was Israel able to build a powerful military within days of the formation of the state?
Just as India and Pakistan had an army on day 1 of their existence. No state exists without first building an army (except when another state's army assists them first). The army in question was previously the provincial government's (Britain's) army. It became the Israeli army once Israel came into existence.

comment How did the monks whose job was to copy books react to Gutenberg's printing press?
I think it is easier to destroy a printing press with a wooden shoe than it is to destroy a mill.

coleopterist --I don't think we should ask people to add wiki links to their questions unless of course they are questioning material on the wiki itself. Though I am happy to have a community discussion for this on the meta. @Balaji he is right on one count though --the question definitely can be improved. Sadly I have no edit privileges.

comment Why do Spaniards have their lunch and dinner so late?
Siesta is a very common custom in the Indian state of Orissa --where it gets incredibly hot (even by the subcontinent's standards) during the day. They also have some fermented rice dishes on their lunch menu and during my trip there I felt a need to take a nap in the afternoon. My guide explained to it was the rice but it could very well have been the temperature outside.

Hi, I have been trying to search my books for such a reference for quite a few days --can't seem to find it. Do you have some more details --like the name of the emperor or the approximate time when such an edict was issued or the text where you encountered this statement?

Caesar was before christ unless you are referring to Caesar as a title. Even before the first Caesar, sacrifice was quite commonplace in the Roman Culture. I have sources which I will post when you specify which Caesar.

comment Why did the Indian National Congress fail to convince Indian minorities to support united India
@user571376 Minor correction: The Mughal empire only briefly managed to consolidate Hindus and Muslims under one empire. After Aurangzeb the support for the Marathas was very high amongst the Hindus and under his rulership much of the previous work done by his predecessors had been undone. The British merely capitalized on existing tensions.

comment Why did some people need to pay a bond in the 1700s in order to get married?
Bonds are almost always posted to remove trust issues. Even to this date, some employers ask new employees to sign a bond which the said employees have to oblige by if they leave the employer before a designated period --a bond with an expiry if you will. Thanks for this interesting answer that clearly explains where the lack of trust came from in this case.
