You seem to be missing the whole point of the question. Before, the discovery of oil, all of them were poor. After the discovery, middle east became rich but africa didn't.

comment Are some developed countries really on the brink of disintegration?
@jamesqf, you are wrong. UK became financially and militarily weak after WW2. They were no longer able to control Indian insurgency. You may say that Indians took a chance. That is why they gave India back to Indians. Otherwise, there would have been a lengthy war like Falklands and India would have been still a part of UK. Who wants to loose a huge landmass like India?

comment Why did the the East-Pakistanis oppose Urdu as their national language while Indians accepted Hindi as theirs?
@Cicero, but, I wonder why Kanara ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanara ), is not "Canada". LOL.

@jamesqf, British gave them independence, coz, they didn't have any other way but to. Giving independence isn't a charity.

Europe isn't a country and wasn't a country ever. If you consider Europe as a country, why UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, still have their own currency rather than Euro? Coz, they take pride of using Pound and so on.

I mean, Indians take pride as being Indians. Why cannot Catalan people take pride of being Spanish?

So, being a part of EU/NATO is in a kind of profitable business for them. So, there are no national spirits, no pride. Its about business. Then, I should really thank Indians that, at least, they have not yet put their country on auction.

Pakistan, Srilanka and Bangladesh didn't break away from India. They broke away from UK.

comment What was the practical reason for East Germany to reunify with West Germany?
"The real reason for reunification was simple power politics: Helmut Kohl was deeply unpopular at the time and on the verge of losing the next election. He needed access to a new loyal voter pool." -- rubbish logic.

comment Why did the USA take no action to help Pakistan during their 1971 war against India?
@MarkC.Wallace, most of the things, he described, are his personal assessments. "Final help it did was to reach candid agreement with USSR and India that West Pakistan to be spared." - what does this mean?

@MarkC.Wallace, he would not be able to do that.
