@PieterGeerkens Did the grenadier act as the "mathematicians" too? Or did they have some less muscular, but smarter people to do it?

For example, you seem to imply that the Persian culture has different attitude towards big man studying mathematics (compared to the Greeks or the Romans), if this is true, can you support this by explanation or reference? Also, can you elaborate on "I suspect that the Persians simply didn't expend enough effort in peacetime to build the necessary infrastructure"?

@Vector good points, 1) listing several examples doesn't prove that it is the trend, and 2) modern democracies haven't been around too long. I'll try to address that in the answer

In addition to the lack of source, it's the last paragraph (which you admit is the weakest one) that make your answer relevant to the question. Otherwise, it is just general observations and unsupported analysis about how artillery corps work.

comment Are Shi’i imams really directly related to the Prophet Muhammad?
@LennartRegebro but most probably it's Shia believer who wrote that article. And probably based on Shia Islamic tradition rather than history

comment Are Shi’i imams really directly related to the Prophet Muhammad?
@LennartRegebro one person can potentially have 2^40 40-generation ancestors, but I'm not sure how much this number is reduced by cousin marriages and stuff

I think this is on-topic, and after @LennartRegebro edit it doesn't look "judging" anymore

comment Historical causes of the civil wars in Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria?
one of the arguments I heard a lot is that the present Middle Eastern countries and borders were defined rather arbitrarily by the Europeans without any sensitivities to the existing identities, such as ethnics, tribes and religions which already exist. Previously there were no notions of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Israel or Jordan, these "nations" were kind of forced by the arbitrarily-defined borders.

@Kobunite I was referring to the version before your edit, with bad grammar, punctuation and capitalization. Now it doesn't look so bad.
