Which is closer to Old Dutch? If Dutch is anything like English, no dialect is closer to the common root of the language. All of them have gone through various changes to get where they are today. |

Is there a commonly-accepted book or a site that explains the history-of-everything? Read a little bit about each of your questions there, and let your interests take you wherever you want! Want to know about the Mayans and Aztecs? Start with their Wikipedia articles. Want to know about the Vikings? Read their Wikipedia article. It won't have all the facts, but it's a pretty darn good introduction. Then, when you have a specific question that Wikipedia can't help with, come back here and we'll be happy to help! |

Is there a commonly-accepted book or a site that explains the history-of-everything? Wikipedia is probably the most comprehensive, accessible, and affordable work on general history that you're going to find. |

How did it happen that countries and cities got different names in different languages? @Drux, it is, though filtered through French. A more apt example would be "Paris", pronounced with a final /s/ in English and in earlier French, but without a final /s/ in modern French. |

How did it happen that countries and cities got different names in different languages? Sometimes the native language changes and the borrowed name stays the same. For example, Illinois has an /oj/ sound in English and in the original French, but in the modern French it has a /wa/ sound. |

How did it happen that countries and cities got different names in different languages? Some names still are subject to translation, depending on context. |
