Interestingly, roughly the same number of people were injured or killed in the first eleven hours of the last day of World War I than on all of D-Day: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_11,_1918#Last_casualties (10,000 casualties, 2,700 deaths).

I can't think of any example where a colonial power left a colony "unclaimed" after WWII; as far as I know, all colonies reverted to their colonial masters before becoming independent in the 1940s-60s. Why would France be any different?
