Sep 30, 2013 at 18:19 | comment | added | Lennart Regebro | I still find the idea that you add a red star on a flag because you got a couple of air planes patently absurd. Yes you said something about that, that is the whole gist of your answer.

Sep 30, 2013 at 16:31 | comment | added | user2590 | @LennartRegebro - it's not speculation. There is evidence. I suggest you read the post carefully because my words are very measured, instead of jumping to confusions. BTW, how long did the flag come after the air-force? Are they required to IMMEDIATELY change their flag? You don't know what other factors were involved. Nor did I claim that the planes were the direct cause-I simply used that to show there were strong ties between the two. But no matter: Honest scholars will understand what I wrote and the research that is behind it-It discusses long term historical trends. Others will not.
Sep 30, 2013 at 10:47 | comment | added | Lennart Regebro | @FelixGoldberg It is pure speculation, based on the idea that taking some details from a flag somehow would be an important part of Soviet-Afghan relations, which I find unlikely. It also seems the planes pre-date the changes to the flag, so it's unclear how it's relevant.
Sep 30, 2013 at 10:44 | comment | added | Felix Goldberg | @LennartRegebro This is not pure speculation Vector has adduced evidence (such as the donated planes) and done comparisons (the 1980 flag). While one cannot say he has conclusively proved the hypothesis, he certainly provided here a good argument and food for thought. In my book that's a +1, not a -1. I urge you to reconsider.

Sep 30, 2013 at 6:34 | comment | added | user2590 | @PieterGeerkens - do you have any explanation as to the sudden appearance in 1928, then disappearance, then reappearance of that star in 1978/80 after a 50 year lapse? Just coincidence? Fashion trends? perhaps? I have provided one in an edit.

Sep 30, 2013 at 5:30 | comment | added | user2590 | @PieterGeerkens - Comment is entirely off point. Is there some reason why suddenly in 1928 the Afghans decided to put a red star on their flag when such a thing was never on any of their previous flags? They suddenly took a liking to red stars in 1928? Was there some kind of red star fashion fad in 1928? They suddenly wanted to show they weren't Jewish in 1928? I cited a reference to the communist red star and gave plenty of historical context to my hypothesis, so that worthy scholars such as yourself would give some thought to this answer. It's quite disappointing when they don't do so.
Sep 30, 2013 at 5:16 | comment | added | Pieter Geerkens | The five-pointed star means only one thing - they weren't Jewish, and so didn't use the only other traditional star symbol, that strongly associated with Judaism, David's star.
