Aug 23, 2017 at 12:22 comment added Pieter Geerkens Might be worth noting, en passant, that the over-aggressive mining of salt domes in Florida is the cause of their many sink-holes.

Jun 4, 2015 at 9:23 comment added T.E.D. I'm modifying that part a bit to make it less absolute. I think the "saltern" link I added there might clear up a few of the questions in the comments.
Jun 3, 2015 at 23:28 comment added jamesqf @user54609: Perhaps because the amount of salt in seawater (about 4%) is much less than in a concentrated solution (35%), so you'd have to boil off a lot more water.
Jun 3, 2015 at 23:21 comment added ithisa Why can't you cook seawater to recover the salt then? Why do you need to use the sun?

Jun 3, 2015 at 21:21 comment added Relaxed @BanksySan Actually the most efficient early modern salt mining techniques require large quantities of water and wood so a climate quite different from that best suited to sea salt extraction. It works by flooding an underground mine, then cooking the brine to recover the salt.
Jun 3, 2015 at 19:08 comment added jamesqf @BanksySan: Production of salt from sea water requires sunny weather. Presumably the salt from Wales was mined. I know there have been salt mines just across the border in Cheshire for centuries.
Jun 3, 2015 at 19:06 comment added SJuan76 @BanksySan salt production from sea water requires a sunny climate. But salt is also found in deposits, and mined. Obviously, underground mining has little correlation with the climate. bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-29879012
Jun 3, 2015 at 17:04 comment added BanksySan If the extraction of salt required reliable sunny whether, why was it imported from Wales? Wales is a country associated with lush green fields, due to the amount of cloud and rainfall there.
