Sep 20, 2019 at 19:05 comment added Eugene The image is from a Quora thread I remembered reading and found again: quora.com/Was-Germany-ever-part-of-the-Roman-Empire. Quora has the same image use policy as Stack, so I presume the guy there posted it in good faith, but the problem is a bit recursive. The idea behind an answer is from a talk I attended once at uni, that made a convincing argument that the Catholic/Protestant divide mirrors the Roman/Barbarian divide, but it was a long time ago and not recorded to the best of my knowledge.
