A form of government where sovereignty is contained in a single individual (though in exceptional circumstances some monarchies contain two rulers). The term is rather broad: it covers both hereditary monarchies and elective monarchies, absolute monarchies and constitutional monarchies. Monarchy was much more common in the pre-modern era, although many monarchies remain today.
