Common name of two wars in Vietnam beginning in 1955 as independence revolt in French Indochina, then after partition of the country between South Vietnam and her allies (mostly United States) and North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Bloc. The war ended in 1975 with North Vietnam victory and had large cultural impact on American population.
