Between 1962 and 1964 I was on a cruise ship, the "Riviera Prima". I stayed on when her name was changed to "Viking Princess" (new Norwegian shipowners). I was her Assistant Purser when she was on fire in the Caribbean in April 1966. The ship was a total loss, but we saved all the passengers, other than two who had a heart attack. Two months later I had the same position on the "Castelfelice", a liner going from Southampton, UK to Australia and NZ. For the next 39 years I worked for Assicurazioni Generali, including 12 years as their Marine Cargo Underwriter in the City of London. In my last years in Head Office (Italy) I followed from Trieste and Genoa an underwriting operation in the Lloyd's Building, and I participated to all the underwriting meetings (with a representative from Swiss Re) as a board member representing the Italian company, until my retirement 10 years ago. For the last 16 years I have been the Marine Insurance Lecturer at MIB School of Management in Trieste and for the last 10 years a Teacher of English (with songs, articles and films) at the University of the Third Age of Monfalcone. I also teach English privately to about 30 "patients" (they have to be, with me ...) All the above: for free (voluntary, unpaid work).
