It was caused by poor management of the situation and over crowding, the pens in question had a maximum capacity of 2,200 (which should have been reduced to 1,600 for safety reasons) but the Police allowed in excess of 3,000 to enter the terrace pens. Most of the people who died were crushed to death due to the amount of people. A recent inquest found that the police shifted the blame onto the supporters. Blaming it on the supporters is actually considered pretty offensive over here. | |
