(Hartlepool and Whitby were the other targets; also Lowestoft and Yarmouth later in the war) The shelling caused a number of civilian casualties and damage to property in the towns, but its chief effect was to put pressure on the Royal Navy to monitor German fleet activity and intercept any surface forces before they got close enough to cause harm.
