Jun 4, 2023 at 15:52 | comment | added | Pieter Geerkens | @Andrei: This seems only partially correct. According to Wikipedia, Nicolas Appert, inventor of canning, applied in 1806 to the French government for award of its 1795 contest prize of 12,000 francs for an improved food preservation method. Initially denied, likely because no-one knew how the method worked, that decision was reversed in 1810 on condition that Appert publish the technique. He did, but production problems prevented widespread use until after 1815,

Oct 13, 2011 at 20:55 | comment | added | Andrei | The legend has it that inventor of canned food came to Napoleon with his invention just before Russian campaign. Napoleon refused to use the canned food in his troops. And that this eventually was one of the reason of failures of his food supply during the winter. Never knew if this legend was true.
Oct 13, 2011 at 20:52 | comment | added | Andrei | Your question is interesting. However, equally interesting question is "How chain of supply of Napoleo army failed during the winter in Rusia". You question assumes that his chain of suply was always successful. This was apparently not always true.
