Jun 4, 2017 at 15:34 comment added Pieter Geerkens Charging cavalry used their sabre as a sort of mini-lance, leaning forward from the stirrups and pointing it forward of the horses head. Length of reach was valuable, for the same reason that a longer lance would enable one to unhorse and/or skewer an opponent before their weapon made contact with you. One could also catch the opponents sabre and parry it just as in any other fencing encounter.
