I'd take that as listing Flu among the various health problems he suffered from time to time, not necessarily a life-long problem itself. Still, that means he did probably have it at least once. That's better than nothing, and might even answer the question.

Jan 3, 2017 at 15:28 comment added T.E.D. @called2voyage - Got a reference for that? Flu would have been my first guess, but it isn't the kind of disease that stays with a person long-term (like TB does) so that "for much of his life" part is confusing.
