And if you moved the two separate phalanxes together, the back row in the front phalanx and the front row in the back phalanx would now be middle rows. You could eliminate the two new middle rows, reunite the front and back phalanxes, and repeat over and over until there wasn't any phalanx left. I suppose that often there weren't enough men available and the phalanx turned out both too narrow and without enough rows for the tactical situation. | |
