Oct 15, 2019 at 16:09 | comment | added | Voo | Just for context: It should be noted that "Heil X" is a greeting that is still used in parts of Austria (parts of Tyrol the very least) - perfectly innocent and without right-wing connotations. IT predates the NSDAP by a good bit. Not something a tourist should try though and very localized these days in my experience.

Oct 14, 2019 at 15:53 | comment | added | Darrel Hoffman | @HagenvonEitzen Good point - At least as depicted in films (no idea how accurate this is historically), the former is often used between Nazi officers even when Hitler himself is not present, while the latter would only be used when speaking directly to him.
Oct 14, 2019 at 15:50 | comment | added | Hagen von Eitzen | Note that there is a semantic difference between "Heil <name>" and "Heil, <name>"
Oct 14, 2019 at 13:32 | comment | added | Cubic | "Of related interest, it was not uncommon in Jyland / Jutland (Denmark) even in the 1970s for adult men to introduce themselves to other adult males by simply saying their family name and nodding (no 'Hello' or such like, no first name)." On that note, a firm handshake and saying your last time is a perfectly acceptable greeting in a business setting in Germany, unless it has fallen out of fashion very recently.

Oct 12, 2019 at 9:40 | comment | added | Lars Bosteen | @ShougaReberi I was under the impression that one didn't need any reputation to accept, only to vote - but, no matter, there's no hurry to accept (in fact, most users consider it best to wait a day or two). Also, I haven't finished with this answer (it's not actually as straightforward as it seems so I'll be adding to it).
