Nov 27, 2012 at 11:29 comment added SMeznaric @kubanczyk That is an interesting point. Do you have more information on this?
Nov 14, 2012 at 16:17 comment added kubanczyk Byzantines still maintained the Forum, at least until 608, when they built their last monument there (Phokas column).

Nov 14, 2012 at 14:42 comment added T.E.D. Its tough to say. My guess is that the critical period in the city's decline from major City to destitute town happened during the period that the Byzantines took it back from the Ostrogoths, but I don't have data to back this conjecture up.
Nov 14, 2012 at 10:38 comment added SMeznaric What would you say would be the time when they stopped maintaining the forum? Did the Ostrogoths still maintain it? How about the Byzantines when they reconquered? Is there any information on this?

Nov 13, 2012 at 22:25 comment added Anixx I think you grossly underestimate the population of Rome. At a time it was home to over a million people.
Nov 13, 2012 at 15:51 comment added T.E.D. @kubanczyk - Can you show it to me? Colin made a pretty heavy study of population numbers, but he sadly died a decade or so back, so his data may be out of date. Still, I doubt it's off by enough to significantly change the sense of this answer.
Nov 13, 2012 at 15:26 comment added kubanczyk Nah. I've seen an estimate 75,000 for 8th century and down to a historical minimum of 25,000-35,000 in 1084 after sacking by Normans.
