(virology.ws/2019/08/22/the-evolving-concept-of-virus traces the shift in meaning of the word to the modern sense.) If you google-books search for 19th century "virus squad" you will find mention of vaccinating squads and collecting squads, as in google.com/books/edition/Yale_Medical_Journal/… .

Sep 13, 2021 at 4:56 comment added Suzdalia @JonathanReez: also "virus squads" is a modern term, since it was definitely not known through much of pox history that it even was a virus. That makes it hard to search for a relevant term to find other (historical) sources.
