What did they call Gothic and Baroque architecture before the modern terms came into use?
Classical (17th-18th century) and neoclassical (mid 18th century on) architecture are clearly distinguished – in English and Latin languages (but not in German). See Neoclassical architecture Wikipedia page or the introduction of John Summerson's The Classical Language of Architecture.
